FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE |
Tokyo, Japan, November 2, 2004 -- Jacobs Vehicle Systems, a wholly owned subsidiary of Danaher Corporation (NYSE: DHR) has been chosen as a development partner by the New ACE Institute Co., Ltd. Jacobs will be supplying an electronically controlled VVA technology to their low emissions diesel engine research work. New ACE was founded to develop a new diesel combustion concept based upon the research performed by its predecessor, the Advanced Combustion Engineering Institute. The research work strives to improve diesel combustion by reducing the exhaust emissions and increasing the thermal efficiency of future diesel engines.
The Jacobs VVA system provides the possibility of a continuous variable valve lift and timing, which can be changed from one engine cycle to another when the VCU (valve control unit) interacts with the engine ECM. Jacobs is delivering the hardware, the VCU, and the software to New ACE. The hardware, characterized by a very low weight and height, can be installed under the existing engine valve cover. The system requires only minimal changes to some of the overhead components, being virtually interchangeable with the classical fixed timing rocker arms system. “Jacobs has been moving valves under the tightest tolerances for over forty years with the Jake Brake. Many of our partners recognize this value, and now are coming to us to move valves for positive power also,” said Dave Smith, Vice President Engineering, Jacobs Vehicle Systems. “The Jacobs VVA system provides New ACE with the flexibility and freedom to actuate their engine valves in accordance with their own engine combustion strategy, enabling reduced emissions and increased performance while still delivering the valuable Jake Brake slowing power the industry has grown-up trusting.”
As governments and engine manufacturers accelerate their drive for efficient, low-emissions diesel engines, VVA technology is proving to be one more plausible enabling technology to help engine manufacturers achieve their emissions goals.
