PRESS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Jacobs Vehicle Systems is pleased to announce the availability of exhaust brakes for Dodge Ram vehicles with Cummins engines through the 1999 model year. The product is known as the E-Brake by Jacobs® available through Cummins distribution, and the Jacobs Exhaust BrakeTM available through Mopar.

THE BRAKE THAT GIVES YOUR WALLET A BREAK.

The exhaust brake is an auxiliary braking system designed for operation with Dodge Ram Trucks powered by Cummins Diesel Engines. The Exhaust brake can lower your operating costs by extending service brake life up to an estimated 3 times longer! And the exhaust brake, in combination with your service brakes, gives you the ability to face the most demanding downhill conditions with complete confidence - even when you're towing, or carrying a heavy payload.

Here's how it works: When the exhaust brake is activated, it restricts the flow of exhaust gases and increases the back pressure inside the engine. The increased back pressure in the engine creates resistance against the pistons, slows the crankshaft's rotation and helps to control the vehicle's speed.

FEATURES & BENEFITS

  • The E-Brake by Jacobs (Jacobs Exhaust Brake) is the only Cummins approved exhaust brake for this application.
  • It is vacuum actuated, powered by the existing vehicle vacuum system. No additional air supply is required.
  • The brake activation is a "Vacuum ON, Spring OFF" system design. Vehicle vacuum is used to "Close" the brake butterfly and a return spring, built into the actuator, returns the butterfly to the "Open" position when the throttle pedal is depressed. This is a fail-safe feature which ensures that, in the event of a vacuum or electrical loss, the butterfly will always return to the "Open" position, preventing engine damage and expensive tow charges. Competitive brakes do not have this feature and rely on a two stage vacuum system to close and open the butterfly.
  • The brake is installed in place of the existing exhaust elbow that fits between the turbocharger and the exhaust pipe so no cutting or welding is required.
  • The internal profile of the brake housing has been designed (patent pending) to ensure that the additional exhaust restriction caused by the installation of the butterfly is minimized and stays within the DaimlerChrysler/Cummins specification. This results in no loss of power when the engine is being driven.
  • This product was designed in conjunction with Cummins Engine Company and DaimlerChrysler Coproration.

PERFORMANCE

The E-Brake (Jacobs Exhaust Brake) will provide retarding horsepower, which will give:

  • Increased control on steep grades.
  • Increased control when towing.
  • Increased service brake life.
  • Lower vehicle-operating costs.

WARRANTY

Cummins Warranty:

Product sold through Cummins dealers carries a FIVE-YEAR, 100,000-mile warranty from the date of sale. Other installation parts in the kit carry A ONE-YEAR, unlimited mileage warranty from the date of sale.

Mopar Warranty:

Mopar Accessories are covered by either the 3-year/36,000-mile New Vehicle Limited Warranty, or the 12-month/12,000-mile Mopar Warranty, whichever is more favorable to you. See your dealer for full details and a full copy of the Warranty.

BRAKE ACTIVATION BY THE ECM

With the "Dash Switch" in the "On" position, the E Brake will be automatically turned "ON" when the throttle position is at idle and turned "OFF" as soon as the throttle is depressed.

The ECM on 1999 model year trucks contains software for E Brake activation/deactivation. It is not necessary to recalibrate the ECM when installing an E Brake on the 1999 model year

The ECM on the 1998 1/2 model year has pin #20 available for E Brake activation/de-activation but does not contain the required software. A new calibration must be loaded into the ECM, which takes approximately 25 minutes. See your Cummins or Mopar dealer for Calibration.

MODEL YEAR IDENTIFICATION

Truck model years change every July. For example, build on the 1998 model year Dodge Ram commenced in July 1997. As the engine was changed to the ISB in January 1998, trucks built from that date were classed as the 1998 1/2 model year.

To determine wheather the vehicle is a 1998 1/2 or a 1999, please check the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN #) located on the plate on the windshield.

From the left of the tag, count across to the 10th position

For a 1998 1/2 model year there will be a "W" in this position

For a 1999 model year there will be an "X" in this position.

AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS

Exhaust brakes are not approved for new installations on vehicles equipped with automatic transmissions.
