PRESS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

JAKE BRAKE® CELEBRATES 40th BIRTHDAY

Enhancing driver confidence and vehicle control by providing highest quality, highest performance Jake Brake® engine brakes

BLOOMFIELD, Conn., March 12, 2001 -- Jacobs Vehicle Systems™ (www.jakebrake.com--a wholly-owned subsidiary of Danaher Corporation – NYSE: DHR) today announces the 40th anniversary of the shipment of its first engine brake kit, and 40 years of leadership in engine retarding.

Proud History
Brake fade almost cost the founder of the Cummins Engine Company, Clessie L. Cummins his life. After losing his brakes from driving down California’s Cajon Pass, he nearly collided with a train that was crossing his path. On the miles that lie ahead, Clessie began thinking of ways to use the power of his diesel engine to help slow down safely. By 1957, the Jacobs Engine Brake™ was patented and being tested. Since then, users of North American heavy duty diesel engines and many Asian and European diesel engines have come to depend on Jake Brake® retarders, making it the most specified heavy dutry truck component brand. In 1983, Jacobs celebrated the production of its 500,000th brake. 1,000,000 brake kits were produced by 1993, and in 1999, Jacobs Vehicle Systems shipped their 2,000,000th brake kit. Today, Jacobs Vehicle Systems is now celebrating the 40th birthday of its legendary Jake Brake engine brake product.

The Next Forty Years & Beyond
Engine designs of the future will have to accommodate stringent emissions standards while providing better performance, reliability and durability. The emphasis on component integration is critical to meet these standards and the value demanded by engine users. Integrating the engine brake function is the reality of new engine overhead designs. The engines of the future will require a robust, reliable variable valve overhead system to provide fuel economy and emissions reductions while increasing functionality and driveability. Jacobs Vehicle Systems clearly leads the way in the development of this technology for diesel engine manufacturers, with proven benefits based on features important to our customers. As our solutions are integrated into our customers' overall engine design, additional optimization and benefits are being jointly realized.

The end-user can expect lower overall weight, higher performance, and even better durability in the engines of tomorrow that utilize a partnership with Jacobs Vehicle Systems.
