PRESS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Intebrake Engine Braking System For Signature 600

COLUMBUS, Ind., July 15, 1997 -- The Signature 600's revolutionary engine braking system, known as Intebrake,™ is the direct result of a strategic alliance formed in 1995 by Cummins Engine Co. and Jacobs Vehicle Systems to design and develop braking systems for all Cummins engines.

The purpose of this alliance was to combine the complementary strengths of two industry leaders with the objective of creating leading-edge braking products that would exceed customer expectations for performance, quality, reliability and durability. The exceptional Intebrake engine braking system is the first fulfillment of this alliance.

"When we entered our relationship with Cummins, we anticipated that the world of brakes would change," said Scott Fowler, vice president of sales and marketing for Jacobs.

"We knew that the weight, height and performance of traditional engine brakes could improve. Development of the Intebrake demonstrates how quickly and dramatically change can occur when two companies with complementary skills make a commitment to work closely, share resources and cooperate to find solutions to exceed customer expectations."

Intebrake is a breakthrough in design and technology. The brake itself looks very much like a traditional rocker arm. As a result, it uses much less material than a traditional engine brake and, therefore, weighs less than previous brake designs.

The Intebrake adds only 20 lb to the engine's weight, as opposed to 100 lb for a more traditional engine brake. In addition, the brake adds no height to the engine.

Intebrake utilizes cam lobes designed specifically for braking, where traditional engine brakes are activated by the injector lobe or exhaust lobe of the camshaft. This precise timing, in combination with large displacement, excellent turbo boost and airflow characteristics of the Signature 600, yields an engine and brake package that produces 600 braking horsepower. More traditional engine brakes are capable of producing 450 braking horsepower.

Because the Signature 600 camshaft is designed as an integral part of the total engine system, it has significant advantages over add-on brakes. When maximum engine braking is needed, the Signature 600 Electronic Control Module automatically manages accessory functions to increase braking capacity. In addition, Intebrake offers six engine brake settings to choose from, for control in any terrain or driving condition.

Cummins Engine Co. Inc. is the world's largest producer of 200+ hp diesel engines. Based in Columbus, Ind., Cummins is also a leading manufacturer of alternative fuel engines, diesel engine components, service products and power systems. In 1996 Cummins reported record sales of $5.3 billion.
