Jacobs Expands International Presence With DAF Contract
BLOOMFIELD, Conn., August, 1997 -- Jacobs Vehicle Systems recently announced that it will supply DAF Trucks N.V. of Eindhoven, The Netherlands, with Jacobs Engine BrakeŽ retarders for the truckmaker's new line of DAF 95XF trucks. This year Jacobs expects to supply about 4,000 engine brakes for the vehicle's 6-cylinder, 12.6 liter diesel engines, according to Mike Spencer, technical marketing manager for Jacobs Vehicle Systems in Europe.
The product, added Spencer, was designed and developed by Jacobs and will be known as the D.E.B. (DAF Engine Brake). It will be made at Jacobs' manufacturing facility in Bloomfield, Conn.
The development of an engine brake for DAF is the second major agreement with a European-based truck manufacturer for Jacobs Vehicle Systems, which also supplies Renault V.I. of France with engine brakes for their 11- and 12-liter engines.
"Jacobs is very committed to expanding our international presence," said Scott Fowler, vice president for Jacobs. "The DAF agreement is another step in that direction, and another example of the acceptance and demand for Jacobs Engine Brakes in world markets."
DAF, which has been making trucks for close to 70 years, was purchased by Paccar in November of last year. Unlike most North American truckmakers, DAF designs and manufactures many of its own vehicle components, including the engines. One of seven major truck manufacturers in Europe, DAF supplies vehicles with GVW ratings of 14,000 to 96,800 lbs. The new, top-of-the-line 95XF model was launched in January, along with a new engine rated at 381, 428 and 483 horsepower.
